Susan Stryker
Historian and Filmmaker
Susan Stryker (she/her) has helped shape the cultural conversation on transgender issues for 30 years as an historian, filmmaker, and theorist. She earned her Ph.D. in United States History at University of California-Berkeley in 1992 and worked for many years as the executive director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco, before moving into an academic career.
She is Professor Emerita of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she directed the Institute for LGBT Studies, and currently holds a Stanford Humanities Institute External Faculty Fellowship. Susan is the author of Transgender History: The Roots of Today’s Revolution, co-editor of the two-volume Transgender Studies Reader, founding co-editor of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, and co-director of the Emmy-winning documentary film Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria. She has wide-ranging experience as a consultant on trans issues in film and media, museums, architecture, and public policy.
