Hew Rose Evans
Executive Assistant & Board Liaison
Born and raised in the American South, Hew Rose Evans (they/them – all pronouns) has always been interested in utilizing cultural heritage as a tool for social justice. While studying historic preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Hew worked tirelessly to document the region’s historical sites and artifacts related to Slavery and the African Diaspora. Summarizing their experiences, Hew’s undergraduate capstone focused on how climate change and sea-level rise inflict disastrous and irreversible damage to coastal communities of color.
Hew is continuing their advocacy here in New York City, where their work has explored how cultural heritage institutions can create inclusive communal space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and can act as sites for the atonement and acknowledgment of their stories. Previous to their work at our museum, Hew acted as a Grants Assistant for the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and as the Administrative & Programming Assistant at Village Preservation, using both opportunities to promote Queer history and introduce intersectional dialogues.
Hew received their B.F.A. in Historic Preservation in 2020 from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where they earned the Dennis and Elaine Swartz Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. They recently completed their M.A. in Museum Studies at New York University in 2022, and their post-graduate thesis, “Atoning for a Queered History,” explores the growth and management of national-scale museums devoted to LGBTQIA+ histories and cultures
