Event Description:

35 patrons hospitalized. $10,000 in damage. 40 officers involved with no disciplinary action taken. Despite the terrifying and brutal violence experienced at Blue’s Bar, a haven for primarily Black and Latino patrons on 43rd street in Manhattan, the attack in September 1982 received no media coverage. But it did incite a riot; one that would renew the Gay Rights Movement of the 1980’s in New York City and beyond.

Join us and the Brooklyn Community Pride Center as we kick-off Black History Month with a screening of Beau Lancaster’s (The Shady Historian) work-in-progress, “Gay, Black, and Blue: Raid on Blues Bar.” The 45-minute film uses a collection of primary sources to uncover the lost story of the Blues Bar Riots and captures oral histories from 4 LGBTQ+ activists in New York at the time. Interviewees include Dr. Joyce Hunter, James Credle, Sarah Schulman, and Andy Humm.

Screening will be followed by a short talk-back with Beau Lancaster and James Credle (Black and White Men Together).
