Oregon’s No on 9 Campaign: Lessons on Fighting Extremism Today

Event Description:

Thirty years ago, battle lines were drawn across Oregon through an unprecedented series of 35 anti-gay ballot measures. Today we see a proliferation of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state houses across the country. Teachers are threatened for teaching about Black, Brown and Queer lives. Families are threatened for affirming their childrens’ gender identities.

This panel will tell stories of how Oregonians mobilized 30 years ago to defeat hate and build a stronger statewide movement to defend everyone’s democratic rights. Join No on 9 organizers and long-time movement leaders as they present No on 9 Remembered: a look back at the intersectional movement that defeated Measure 9.

Presenters:

Scot Nakagawa, Director of the 22nd Century Initiative, served on the staff of the No on 9 campaign then as Organizer with the Task Force’s Fight the Right Project.

Rev. Cecil Charles Prescod, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a brother in the Order of Corpus Christi, was part of a number of grassroots community responses to Measure 9.

Holly Pruett, Western States Center Senior Fellow and author of NoOn9Remembered.org, was a No on 9 volunteer then Deputy Campaign Manager of the 1994 No on 13 campaign.

Eric K. Ward, Executive Vice President of Race Forward, Senior Adviser to Western States Center and co-curator of NoOn9Remembered.org, was an anti-bigotry community organizer supporting the No on 9 campaign.

Thalia Zepatos, Consultant with Freedom to Marry Global, was No on 9’s Deputy Campaign Manager and later Director of Organizing and Training at the Task Force.
